GameMaker Server is shutting down in 2027
Hi everyone!
GameMaker Server has had an amazing 15 years of service. However, after 4 years of "end-of-service", I feel it is finally time to say goodbye.
Next year, 2026, will be the last full year of GameMaker Server. Somewhere in 2027 (I have not chosen a specific date yet) the server will be shut down. This means that you will no longer be able to play games that still use GameMaker Server's services.
I will make an effort to aid game preservation by releasing source code and/or software that lets you play old games with a locally hosted server. Unfortunately, I cannot make any promises about a timeline for this. You should not expect to be able to run your own instance of GameMaker Server and play together with others.
I am thankful to everyone who has helped shape GameMaker Server into what it has become. It wouldn't have existed without all of you.

Hi Size43,
I am writing to you because, like many others in the GameMaker community, I grew up using your GameMaker Server (GMS) extension. It was a game-changer for many of us, making multiplayer accessible to everyone.
I’ve decided to recreate the spirit of GMS to continue your legacy in a modern way. As of right now, I have developed a Node.js-based Master Server and a GML extension that currently supports:
Dynamic Game Registration:
Developers can point to the master server and register their Game IDs on the fly.
Account Management:
Real-time registration and login system with database persistence.
Global/Local Chat:
A synchronized chat system for players.
Object/Position Sync:
Real-time P2P-style synchronization across instances.
Web Dashboard:
A Master Panel for developers to manage their games, users, and world data.
My goal is to keep the "one-line-of-code" philosophy that made your original extension so brilliant.
I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for the inspiration.
Will the website be open source for if there are popular games that people dont want to see leave? (For example, DONTFORGET which is a popular game on Gamejolt that relies on gamemakerserver for the multiplayer aspect of the game)
welp, it was fun while it lasted.
it was a really fun ride to say the least, but all things must come to an end.
i hope you had a great time with the community as a whole and i wish you the best of luck for your future.
please dont shut down GMS

It's been fun! Awesome community, great memories
Big W to Size43 keeping this platform running at no user cost, no anti-user terms, and being mindful of media preservation

Well thanks for the amazing years of service!
I'm gonna miss playing DFC but I hope we can find alternatives to keep communities going!
But again, thank you, we had a lot of fun :)
